The Managed Investments Screener API finds managed investments that meet the criteria you define. You set the starting universe, apply filter conditions, and choose the data points to return, and the API responds with the matching investments, ready to use in research or to pass to other APIs. This guide covers the workflow for making your first screen and where to go when something goes wrong.

## [Workflow](#workflow)

1. Get an access token

The API uses OAuth 2.0 to authenticate users. Before you can call any endpoint, you must authenticate your account and get an access token.

See the [Authentication](https://developer-beta.morningstar.com/api-authentication) article for information about obtaining and using access tokens.

2. Get data points

Screens are built from data points. Use the data points endpoint to list the data points you can filter on, sort by, and return. The response includes metadata for each one: its data type, the filter operators it supports, whether it depends on a language or currency, whether you can sort by it, and whether it supports fuzzy search.

Use this metadata to choose valid filters and to know when a request needs a language or currency. See [Explore Data Points](https://developer-beta.morningstar.com/managed-investments-screener-api/explore-data-points) for more information about data points and how to call the endpoint.

3. Define the scope and filter conditions

Set the `scope` to define the starting universe, which is limited to your entitled universe. Then use the `query` to narrow the results by applying filter conditions to that universe.

Filters can match exact values, compare numbers and dates, and be combined with `and`, `or` and `not`. Filter conditions are the most important and most complex part of a request. See [Filter Conditions](https://developer-beta.morningstar.com/managed-investments-screener-api/filter-conditions) for the syntax and rules.

4. Select data points and request data

Use the Screener endpoint to retrieve the matching investments. Send a request with your scope, your query, and the data points you want returned for each match. You can also set the sort order, the page size, and the language and currency for dependent data points.

Limits apply to the number of data points per request and the number of results per page. See the [Screen Investments](https://developer-beta.morningstar.com/managed-investments-screener-api/screen-investments) section for guidance on creating requests, and [Example Screens](https://developer-beta.morningstar.com/managed-investments-screener-api/example-screens) for complete requests you can adapt.

5. Check the response

Matching investments are returned with the data points you asked for, along with metadata that includes the total number of matches and the tokens you use to retrieve further pages. Each match includes its performance ID, which you can use in requests to other APIs.

Always check `metadata.messages` in the response. A `200` status code doesn't guarantee that every data point was returned for every investment, because data points you aren't entitled to are reported there instead. See [Work with Results](https://developer-beta.morningstar.com/managed-investments-screener-api/work-with-results).

Steps 1 and 2 are setup. You repeat step 1 only when your access token expires, and step 2 only if your entitlements change. Steps 3 through 5 make up the screening workflow, which you repeat for each screen.
