Investment Details API

Get detailed profile data for a single investment, drawing on Morningstar's fundamental, reference, and historical data.

Getting Started

The Investment Details Feed API returns detailed data views for investments in your entitled universe. This guide covers the workflow for making your first call and where to go when something goes wrong.

Most use cases require nothing beyond the steps described below. Additional inputs may be required if you are querying views derived from specific packages. Check the Package-Specific Guides section for a list of these packages and related inputs.

Steps 1 through 2 are one-time setup, though you will repeat step 2 if your entitlements change.

Workflow

1

Get an access token

The API uses OAuth 2.0 to authenticate users. Before you can call any endpoint, you must authenticate your account and get an access token.

See the Authentication article for information about obtaining and using access tokens.

2

Get investment identifiers

The API uses Morningstar Performance IDs as the primary identifier. Use the Universe API to retrieve the performance IDs for the investments in your entitled universe.

If you hold other identifiers, such as ISINs, CUSIPs, or trading symbols, the API can look up the matching performance IDs for you. See the section on Identifier Lookup in the Identifiers article for more information.

3

Request data

Send a request with your investment identifier and and any additional query parameters required. See the Investment Details section for guidance on creating requests.

Managing Issues

If a request fails or returns unexpected results:

  • Check the Error Messages page to find out what an error code or message means.
  • See Troubleshooting for help with common issues, such as missing data or unexpected responses.
  • Browse the FAQs for answers to frequently asked questions.
