Morningstar MCP Server
Connect trusted data to your AI workflows with the Morningstar MCP Server.
Set Up Morningstar MCP
The Morningstar MCP Server connects your AI client to Morningstar data and research tools. Once connected, you can look up funds and securities, retrieve datapoints, review analyst research, and analyze portfolios and holdings, all through natural-language requests in the client you already use.
There are two ways to set it up:
| Set up with plugin | Set up manually | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Most users, if your client supports plugins | Clients without plugin support, or when you only want the server |
| What you get | The MCP Server plus Morningstar-authored skills | The MCP Server only |
| How it works | A single install configures everything | Add the server as a connector or tool, or connect from your own code |
If you're not sure which to choose, start with the plugin. It's the quickest route and includes pre-built workflows for common fund research tasks.
Access
The first time the plugin calls the Morningstar MCP Server, your client prompts you to sign in. Use your Morningstar credentials. For more details, see Authentication. You need a licensed Morningstar account. You'll be asked to sign in with your Morningstar credentials the first time you connect.
Set Up with Plugin
The Morningstar Plugin is the fastest way to get started. In a single install, it configures the Morningstar MCP Server and adds Morningstar-authored skills, so there is no separate server configuration. Together, they give you:
- Morningstar MCP Server Direct access to Morningstar data and research tools, including fund and security lookup, datapoints, analyst research, portfolio analysis, and holdings.
- Skills Pre-built workflows on top of the MCP Server that guide your AI client through repeatable investment research and fund analysis tasks. They use live Morningstar data, produce consistently formatted output, and include guardrails against inferred data.
The plugin is platform-agnostic: it works with any AI client that supports MCP servers and plugins, not only developer or command-line environments.
Platforms and Installation
Choose your platform below.
Install manually by sideloading. Not yet listed in the Claude plugin marketplace.
Use the Plugin
Once the plugin is loaded, there are two ways to use it:
- Pick a skill. Type
/and select one of the following:
| Skill | What it does |
|---|---|
fund-screener | Screen funds against criteria you define |
fund-comparison | Compare funds side by side |
fund-summarizer | Summarize a fund |
medalist-rating-analyzer | Analyze a fund's Morningstar Medalist Rating |
datapoint-finder | Find the Morningstar datapoints you need |
- Ask in plain language. Make a natural-language request, such as "Compare these two funds," and the relevant skill is selected automatically.
Set Up Manually
If your client doesn't support plugins, you only want the MCP Server without the pre-built skills, or you're connecting from your own code, you can connect directly to the Morningstar MCP Server by adding it as a connector or tool.
If your client does support plugins, we recommend setting up with the plugin instead, since it handles both the server and the skills in one step.
