Screener APIs
Powerful, criteria-based screening using flexible filtering logic.
About
Finding investments that meet a set of criteria — rather than looking one up by identifier — is the starting point for research, due diligence, and product construction. The API serves research and product teams building screening tools, and platform teams powering fund and stock discovery, by applying rules-based filter logic across an entitled universe and returning performance IDs plus the data points needed for downstream analysis, without maintaining a screening engine in-house.
The Screener APIs screen across investment types — currently equities and managed investments — each with its own guide and endpoint, but using the same request shape and filter syntax.
Looking for a fixed list of investments instead of a filtered universe? If you already know which investments you want and just need current values, use the Investment List API. For a historical series, use the Time Series API.
Available Screeners
Each screener has its own guide, with getting started steps, filter reference, example requests, and troubleshooting. All screeners share the same request structure, so what you learn in one carries over to the others. More screeners will appear here as they become available.
- Screen equities by exchange Equities Screener API
- Screen managed investments by country available for sale Managed Investments Screener API
Common Use Cases
- Build a fund or stock screener Let users define filter criteria — ranges, exclusions, and multi-factor logic — and return matching investments for a research or discovery tool.
- Generate a candidate list for review Combine scope, filters, and sort order to turn broad eligibility rules into a ranked shortlist for analyst or advisor review.
- Power rules-based product construction Screen an entitled universe against quantitative and qualitative criteria to assemble or rebalance a model or index universe.
- Monitor a universe for new matches Re-run a saved query on a schedule to surface investments that newly meet — or no longer meet — a set of criteria.
Capabilities
- One query model across investment types Screen through dedicated endpoints — such as equities and managed investments — that share the same
scope, query, dataPoints, sort, andpaginationrequest structure. - Flexible filter logic Combine equality (
eq,in,contains), comparison (gt,gte,lt,lte), and logical (and,or,not) operators, including nested compound filters, to express complex screening criteria. - Entitled scope control A
scopeobject sets the starting universe — such as exchange or country available for sale — before filters are applied, so results never exceed what your license covers. - Fuzzy text matching Approximate matching on supported string data points, for filters that would otherwise require an exact value.
- Broad data point coverage More than 5,300 data points across supported investment types, spanning reference data, fundamentals, ESG, factor exposure, pricing, and returns.
- Sorting and token-based pagination Sort by up to two data points and page through large result sets using response-issued pagination tokens, up to 50 records per page.
- Data point discovery A dedicated endpoint per universe returns supported data points and their metadata — type, operators, sortability, and language or currency dependency — for building filter and column pickers programmatically.
Limits
- 100 data points per request Wider views need multiple requests, joined on
performanceId. - 50 records per page The default and maximum page size; larger result sets are paged using the returned pagination token.
- One pagination token per request Use either
paginationTokenNextorpaginationTokenPrevious, not both, to move through a result set. - Two sort fields maximum Sorting supports a primary and a secondary data point; additional ordering must be applied client side. If no sort is provided, results default to ascending order by
performanceId. - Fuzzy search restrictions Fuzzy matching is only available on the
eqoperator, for data points that support it, with a minimum search string of 3 characters. - Token lifetime Access tokens last 60 minutes, so long-running jobs must refresh tokens and retry requests that return
401 Unauthorized.
Access
- Licence Required Yes. Where access depends on your agreement, your Morningstar account manager can confirm what's included.
